Polyglutamic Acid
A naturally occurring biopolymer peptide (a chain of glutamic amino acids) derived from fermented soybeans. It has exceptional water-binding properties holding 5,000 times its weight in water, better than Hyaluronic Acid (HA), making it a potent moisturising ingredient. However, unlike HA, PGA also has antioxidant properties, inhibits the production of melanin and potentially prevents hyaluronidase, which is the enzyme that breaks down the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin. Overall it strengthens the barrier function, improves texture, boosts skin hydration and plumps.
-
Pro-Vitamin D3
A naturally-occurring active essential for the synthesis of Vitamin D which plays a crucial role in skin health. Helps regulate cell growth and differentiation, contributing to a smoother and healthier complexion. Supports the skin's natural defence mechanisms, reducing the risk of infections and inflammation. Furthermore, it aids in the synthesis of collagen, promoting skin elasticity and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
-
Red Algae
Also known as Rhodophyta, has hydrating, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing and antimicrobial properties. Also promotes collagen production and contribute to a more even skin tone by reducing the appearance of pigmentation irregularities.
-

With anti-oxidant and calming properties, Vitamin E is beneficial in helping prevent the signs of premature ageing through protecting the skin from environmental pollution, protecting against UV radiation and powerful anti-inflammatory action.
-
Alanine
One of the amino-acids used by OSKIA with wonderful calming properties to sooth irritated skin.
-
Allantoin
Naturally found in comfrey, sugar beet, chamomile & wheat sprouts, Allantoin is used to calm and repair damaged skin. Ideal active for sensitive or
inflamed skin and heal scars. It stimulates the fibroblasts (cells that produce
collagen) and boosts extracellular matrix synthesis to firm, reduce wrinkles
and scaring. -
Arginine
An amino acid that helps improve skin hydration by enhancing the skin's natural moisture-retaining abilities. It can also support the skin's natural repair processes and improve overall skin health.
-
Balloon Vine Extract
A climbing plant from the tropics, contains high proportions of phytosteroles and triterpens which offer excellent anti-inflammatory & soothing properties. Hugely beneficial for conditions like eczema or dermatitis, it also supports the skin's natural barrier function, helping to maintain moisture and protect against external stressors. Also known as Cardiospermum Halicacabum.
-
Copper
A trace element recognised for its excellent wound healing capability, enhancing action of antioxidants and stimulating collagen production, contributing to skin firmness and elasticity. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe irritated or inflamed skin.
-
Gardenia Flower Extract
Gardenia extract is rich in antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which help protect the skin from free radical damage and promote a more youthful complexion. Reduces the appearance of dark spots and promotes a more even skin tone. It also has soothing properties, helping to alleviate irritation or redness.
-
Gluconolactone
Stimulates the production of Hyaluronic acid. Also a PHA (poly-hydroxy acids) often used instead of an AHA as an effective chemical exfoliator. The significant difference between them and AHAs is that gluconolactone has a larger molecular structure, which limits their ability to penetrate into the skin (6% reduction in skin penetration in comparison to glycolic acid), resulting in less irritating side-effects.
-
Glycine
An amino acid involved in collagen production, essential for wound healing and maintaining skin's elasticity. Including glycine in skincare products can support the skin's ability to repair itself. Also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and calm irritated skin, potentially reducing redness and discomfort.
-
Iron
An essential mineral involved in the production of collagen and important for
wound healing. By boosting collagen production, Iron can help to improve skin elasticity and firmness whilst improving skin texture. It’s also a powerful antioxidant which can help protect the skin from free radical damage and promotes a healthy glow. -
Lysine
A key amino acid that plays a role in collagen synthesis, which is crucial for maintaining skin's elasticity and firmness. Can support barrier function, important for maintaining hydration and protecting against external irritants. Also has wound healing, antiviral and antioxidant properties.
-
Oat Ceramides
Support the skin’s barrier function by helping to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and dryness, therefore promoting a healthy skin microbiome. Soothing and calming, a great ingredient in formulas for sensitive and compromised skin.
-
Vitamin B5 (Panthenol)
An excellent skin softener and conditioner providing suppleness and hydration to irritated skin or dry hair. Stimulates skin cellular proliferation and help tissue repair. It also protects the skin against sunburn and acts as a humectant, holding water within the product or attracting water from the environment.
-

Its inclusion in skincare supports collagen synthesis and can also help minimise the appearance of scars by promoting proper tissue regeneration.
-
Sodium Gluconate
The salt form of Gluconic Acid produced from the sugar Glucose. It is used to improve the stability of a formula and can function as a humectant with isotonic functions, meaning it helps skin retain a balanced amount of water inside and outside the cell wall.
-
Sodium Lactate
The sodium salt of Lactic Acid, which offers hydration-enhancing benefits when used in skincare. It’s part of our skin’s natural moisturising factor which helps to maintain skin’s hydration. It absorbs moisture from its environment and improves water retention.
-
Sodium PCA (Pyrollidone Carboxylic Acid)
Occurs naturally in human skin derived from amino acids and is responsible for binding moisture to the cells. It is highly water-absorbent, holding several times its weight in water, which makes it an excellent humectant.
-
Acmella Flower Extract
Also known as the toothache plant, it's used in skincare for its ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Contains a compound called spilanthol, which has a natural muscle-relaxing effect when applied topically, this helps to smooth and firm the skin.
-
Threonine
An amino acid that Contributes to skin health through its involvement in protein synthesis and overall cellular function. Its properties make it an effective ingredient in skincare products for supporting skin barrier function, moisture retention and overall skin vitality.
Skin Barrier Importance
The barrier comprises of numbers ‘parts’, each of which need to remain intact and healthy. These include the Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF), the Microbiome and the Acid Mantle.
NMF
is an expansive group of chemicals and substances including amino acids, lactates, sugars, salts, PCA, urea and peptides that work together to keep the skin’s surface intact, supple and hydrated. As we age, the NMF naturally weakens, and
external, environmental factors, such as harsh exfoliation and pollutants, can damage and alter it, leading to dryness, accelerated ageing, sensitivity, skin damage and the ability of pathogens to enter the skin and moisture to escape.
The Acid Mantle
(also called the hydro-lipid film) – is a fine layer on the outer surface of our epidermis that is made of a mixture of dead skin cells, oils (sebum), amino acids and other skin secretions and sweat* – it is the fine protective layer that sits between us and the world. This helps keep one’s skin at an optimal, slightly acidic pH between 4.5- 6.2 which is a protective barrier and the body’s first defence against viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. It is also our main protector against Trans epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) which simply means water or hydration escaping from the deeper layers of the skin, in other words, dehydration.
*Acid Mantle composition – water (from sweat), lactic acid, urocanic acid, fatty acids, pyrrolidine carboxylic acid, eccrine glands which secrete amino acids.
Skin Microbiome
the ecosystem of millions of micro-organisms that live on the surface of our skin that includes bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is our body’s first line of defence and a vital part of our immune system.
